Pouilly-Fuissé

One of the first names that spring to mind when white Burgundy is the talking point, is Pouilly-Fuissé. A mere extension of the Mâconnais growths, the appellation lies 6 miles west of the town of Mâcon, gravitating round the famous bluff at Solutré and boxed in-between the northern Crus of Beaujolais to the South and Mâcon-Villages to the North with St Véran forming a "buffer zone" on either side. Pouilly and Fuissé are the names of the two villages at the heart of the appellation.
Around the rock of Solutré, the landscape undulates, while outcrops and gulleys break up the terrain exposing the underlying limestone layer. The vineyards producing Pouilly-Fuissé occupy those sites where the limestone occurs in combination with heavy clays. Many attribute the characteristic flavour, freshness and green-tinged golden colour of the wine to this phenomenon which also highlights the extremely fragmented nature of the vineyards.
As one of the pioneers of Pouilly-Fuissé, Maison Louis Latour was among the first to export this appellation to the United States after the Repeal of Prohibition in the 1930's. Maison Louis Latour remains to this day a committed shipper of Pouilly-Fuissé which is still one of the most popular wines in America.
