Burgundy
Greater Burgundy or "Grande Bourgogne" is not one big vineyard, but gives its name to a province which can be subdivided into four regional departments (administrative region)
Extending from north to south they are :
- The Yonne which includes Chablis
- The Côte d'Or which includes the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune
- The Saône et Loire which includes the Chalonnaise and the Maconnais
- The Rhône wich includes the Beaujolais
The total surface area of vines is approximately 40,000 hectares. This represents an average production of 2.2 million hectolitres of Appellation Contrôlée, or 300 million bottles of wine per year. In all, this represents 10% of the total Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée production of France.
