- Domaine de Valmoissine is located on the site of the ancient monastery of Valmoissine at 500 meters above sea-level. This guarantees sunshine during the summer months whilst remaining cool at night and limits the possibility of spring frosts. The vineyard's southern exposure gives the grapes perfect maturity at the same time as the Grands Crus of Corton. The yield is small in order to ensure perfect maturity and concentration of the grapes, the factors that create the best quality wines. This results in an elegant wine with remarkable finesse.

- Tasting NoteIntense purple red with ripe fruit aromas on the nose. The palate is very fruity and the tannins are present but they should mellow out over the next few months to become quite silky. Tasted November 2010.

There is no doubt that good red Burgundy is expensive and so Domaine de Valmoissine Pinot Noir 2017, Louis Latour is a lovely alternative. The nose offers reds fruits and some savoury notes, followed by a silky palate with more dark fruits and ripe tannins and a lovely, elegant finish.

The 2015 Domaine de Valmoissine, a superb Pinot Noir, is likely their best ever. It could be a perfect storm of vine age, 25-plus years of experience with the area, and a near-perfect growing season that explains the resounding success of this wine. More fruit-focused than a typical red Burgundy, but without the weight or sweetness that characterize many California Pinot Noirs, it still manages to capture the all-to-elusive savory quality often lacking in Pinot Noir-based wines from outside of Burgundy. Although not a red Burgundy, despite being made from the grape of that region, it does have what I consider a hallmark of red Burgundy--ﬂ avor without weight. Here's an exception to the rule that there's no earthy pinot outside Burgundy, although it is made by Louis Latour, one of Burgundy's most famous negociant-growers. The grapes are sourced from the Var region near the south-eastern Meditteranean coast, at similar altitudes to Latour's vineyards in the Cote de Beaune. The nose is earth - not quite farmyard - but definitely earthy and the palate is a delight. There's a lovely balance of black cherry fruit and silky refined tannins. The wine isn't soft, its tannins caress the tongue teasingly. Medium bodied, elegant and satisfying with good length. A good choice with duck. By Julian Whittle (UK)

It could be the greatest vin de pays that has ever been produced from any grape variety, but it is not possible or fair to compare wines of totally different grapes and styles and say which is best. I am certain, however, that it is the most exciting vin de pays I have ever tasted. It is so soft and silky, with such a purity of fruit and so much finesse that few Burgundians would believe this is not a Burgundy, and a fine one at that. Its not cheap for a vin de pays, but it is better than many Burgundies twice its price.

This Burgundian style pinot noir seems even more of a magic trick that the Chardonnay. The Pinot Noir grapes were grown near Aups, a village in the Haut Var of mountainous Provence. It's quite simply the best Pinot I've tasted from a region as far south in France as this. The 500m altitude obviously helps, making for a slow maturation of the fruit, essential with Pinot. Without that slow development, it can be leafy and sweetish. This wine has savory cherries on the nose with a hint of wild herbs. The palate is ripe, soft and subtle, but the voluptuous fruit is brought back into shape by keen acidity. A real delight. (By Andy Cronshaw, UK)
