Description
  • The Grand Cru vineyard of Bâtard-Montrachet lies between the picturesque villages of Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet, home to the world's greatest white wines. Only a narrow strip of land separates this 11.86 hectare vineyard from the great Montrachet itself. Its gentle easterly-facing slope is made up of a deep, rich, gravelly soil which has a limestone base, world renowned for the production of high-quality Chardonnay. Located just below the Montrachet, "Clos Poirier" is a single plot of 0.85 hectares, easily recognisable as it has the only north-south facing vines in this specific vineyard site. The surface area of the appellation worked by Louis Latour is 0.43 hectares located in the eastern part.

Press review
    • Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru "Clos Poirier" 2022 - Bill Nanson Burgundy Report - December 2023The 4th vintage with this label - prior it was blended with other domaine sources. Owned by Mr Poirier, the clos shared with the Pierre Morey domaine of Meursault.
A smaller nose but one of depth. Narrower - more focused - and super concentrated. You trade concentration for (visible) structure in this wine. A finish you can chew but without loss of balance. You will need to wait for this too - but for a different reason - to let it open and become more exuberant.
    • Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru "Clos Poirier" 2022 - Wine Spectator's Insider - 94/100

This expressive white features peach, pineapple and melon flavors, with a hint of orange peel. Rich and accessible now, with good acidity and a spicy, lingering finish. (May 2024, USA)

    • Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru "Clos Poirier" 2021 - James Suckling - July 2023 - 96/100

Complex smoky nose with flint stones, dried mangoes, apple tart and seductive spice box elements. Dried lemons and chamomile. Full-bodied, with so much energy and a solid backbone of both acidity and phenolic tension. Builds and lasts for minutes. Try this after 2024.

    • Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru "Clos Poirier" 2021 - Wine Spectator's Insider Weekly - June 2023 - 95/100

A youthful white, laced with buttery lemon cake, peach, vanilla and citronella aromas and flavors. Supple and harmonious, revealing an undercurrent of seashore/iodine. The superlong finish echoes all the fruit, mineral and baking spice elements. Drink now through 2036. -B.S.

    • Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru "Clos Poirier" 2021 - Tim Atkin - February 2023 - 94/100

This is a half hectare of vines that sits just under Le Montrachet and unusually is planted in north-south rows. It starts with a honeyed nuance and expands into spicy, unctuous tarte tatin layers of flavor. The fervent acidity firms up the back palate and leaves a light saline note on the finish. Less exotic than usual but still in the rounder, lusher style typical of Latour's interpretation of this vineyard.

    • Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru "Clos Poirier" 2021 - Bourgogne Aujourd'hui - 16/20

(mai 2024)

    • Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru "Clos Poirier" 2021 - The Wine Advocate - January 2023 - 92/100

The 2021 Bâtard-Montrachet Clos Poirier Grand Cru exhibits aromas of pear, confit citrus, fresh mint, and toasty new oak. Full-bodied, satiny and textural, it's rich and enveloping, with a fleshy, open-knit core and a nutty barrel-inflected finish.

    • Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru "Clos Poirier" 2021 - Bill Nanson Burgundy Report - January 2023

Here is an impressive volume of aroma - generous and inviting - lovely precision here. Full, generous, a wine of layers and power but never heavy. Lots of concentration here. The finish has concentration too, ending with a haunting, moreish, length. That's a very classical, richer Bâtard but with no lack of energy and freshness. Simply an excellent Bâtard - so a great wine then!

    • Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru "Clos Poirier" 2020 - Burghound.com - 93/100 pts

A more floral, and more elegant, nose is comprised by notes of ripe white peach, citrus and a hint of anise, along with just enough wood influence to mention. There is fine volume to the attractively vibrant mouth coating big-bodied flavors that retain a relatively sophisticated texture that carries over to the clean dry and lingering finish where the only nit is a touch of warmth. Lovely. 2028+

    • Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru "Clos Poirier" 2020 - La Revue du Vin de France - 94/100 pts

The nose reveals spice and toast, yellow fruit and curry. The palate is rich and unctuous, with flavours of pears. It assumes its natural opulence, warm and generous. We liked its persistence showing hints of spice and aniseed.

    • Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru "Clos Poirier" 2020 - Wine Enthusiast - 95/100

Ethereal bright citrus and earth lead to fresh aromas of yellow and white flowers lingering over perfectly ripe lemon skins and wet stone. The palate is quilted with an intricate layer of delicate fresh almonds and whispers of vanilla. Powerful and should deliver plenty of complexities after cellaring well through 2030+. (USA, December 2023)

    • Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru "Clos Poirier" 2020 - The Wine Advocate - January 2023 - 93/100

The 2020 Bâtard-Montrachet Clos Poirier Grand Cru is broad and muscular, opening in the glass with aromas of sweet orchard fruits, freshly baked bread, lime zest, pastry cream and vanilla pod. Full-bodied, ample and layered, its broad attack segues into a fleshy mid-palate framed by lively acids and chalky structuring extracts. In its full-blown style, this is the best Bâtard I've tasted from Latour for some time.

    • Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru "Clos Poirier" 2020 - Wine Spectator Insider - August 2022 - 95/100

Verging on oily in texture, this white exhibits lemon oil, sweet corn, poached pear and earth flavors. Bracing acidity keeps this on
course, and the finish is slightly jumbled now, though long and resonant. Give this some time to integrate. Best from 2024 through 2032. - B.S.

    • Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru "Clos Poirier" 2020 - James Suckling - 96/100

Lots of candied orange, flint and a touch of wet earth in the nose lead you into this bold and concentrated Batard-Montrachet. Rich and quite weighty on the full front and mid-palates, but this is a breeze blowing through it at the finish, even though it packs a tannic and chalky punch. The second vintage of this wine. Drink or hold.

    • Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru "Clos Poirier" 2019 - 94 pts - James Suckling

A rich and powerful 2019 white Burgundy. Very smoky nose with notes of freshly mown hay, candied lemon and lemon curd. Bold and ripe with plenty of textural complexity, pronounced preserved-lemon character and chalky minerality. Interesting nutty and hibiscus notes at the finish.

    • Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru "Clos Poirier" 2019 - The Wine Advocate - January 2021 - 90-92+ pts

The 2019 Bâtard-Montrachet Clos Poirier Grand Cru is turning out nicely, exhibiting aromas of pear, toasted nuts, orange oil and popcorn, followed by a full-bodied, layered and nicely concentrated palate. Though the vines here are still young, this appears to be a fine effort in the making. (William Kelley)
